This paper introduces dissertation topics based on two primary themes of environmental research, Marine Ecology and Environmental Spillover. In the Marine Ecology portion, the dissertation topics focus on gaps in our understanding of Historical Marine Ecology (HME) with the understanding of potential decline of species in marine environments over time, as well as biases in taxonomic and geographical studies and the issues with the limited information we currently understand for underrepresented taxa and ecosystems. In the Environmental Spillover section, the dissertation topics address the potential for pro-environmental behaviour in organizational settings and in cultural behaviours to create larger behavioural changes and potential long-term sustainability impacts. Overall, this dissertation addresses gaps in our understanding in both marine ecosystem dynamics, and the potential of sustained environmental behaviour change for future conservation and related efforts to influence policy.
Focus: To examine the lagging impacts of exploitative colonial resource development in potentially confounding historical marine ecology research studies, and to the degree possible, we will assess how parachute science is utilised to hinder the establishment of HME studies in Global South countries and seek out practical alternatives for equity in the research field.
Focus: To assess the range of first-hand sources in HME studies, ranging from earlier texts and capture reconstructions, how they distinguish our idea of historical marine ecosystems, and contribute to our knowledge of conservation today.
