From Successful Dissertation to Journal Publication

Background

I have been a student in MSc Social Research Methods during 2015. During the course of my study, I was supposed to write a dissertation for which I decided to execute a qualitative study that investigated the impact of vocational and educational initiatives on the day-to-day lives of homeless individuals. To facilitate the process of qualitative research, I was expected to execute semi-structured interviews and small-scale observation of participants at four centers for the homeless in New York. The analysis of the data that was collected was carried out with a thematic analysis. The findings from my study emphasized the significance of such initiatives towards restoration of the confidence and self-efficacy of homeless individuals.

The Next Step

Following the culmination of my research and successful completion of my MSc programme, I was encouraged by my peers, friends and even my supervisor to make an attempt to publish my dissertation within the public domain. With guidance from my supervisor and due support, I embarked on the challenging journey of converting my dissertation into an Academic Research Manuscript (Tribe & Tunariu, 2016). The process is not easy and is rather long-drawn. Needless to say, it is challenging. However, at the same time, I should also mention that the process though challenging is also a rewarding experience. The learning that I derived during the process was immense and I would recommend every Masters’ students to seriously consider publishing their dissertation once they are done with the dissertation itself. Challenges and Learning’s

As mentioned above, though the process was long-drawn and presented several challenges, there were ample learnings that I derived from the entire exercise. At the time of executing work on the article, I gained several insights and the knowledge thus derived is being put to appropriate use while I develop my first PhD publication. However, though there are several learnings to be derived during the process, I would also like to inform future students to keep some things in mind while contemplating publication. First and foremost, it was my good fortune that my supervisor was open to co-author the paper with me. This was significant given that as I had no experience whatsoever in getting a paper published and would not have had the confidence to take the dissertation any further in the absence of any support from my supervisor.

Things to Do

At the outset, it is imperative that you find a journal that matches your research. Once you have identified a journal, you should check out some papers that they have recently published and the style of writing followed in the published papers. Though you can argue that the process of Dissertation Writing is writer-centric, however, journal publications are expected to deliver a punch, needs to revolve around the reader and is driven on the basis of arguments. Anything that you include needs to be directly pertinent to the argument being presented. Do not hesitate to be ruthless while editing sections that might be superficial while only sustaining the key points. The task might sound easy but it is actually not. I had much trouble editing several sections from my dissertation that I felt were important. Process of Publishing

The process of publishing could take a long time. For my paper to be published, it took around 15 months from the time of initial submission. The time taken for publication would vary from journal to journal. There is also the review process where the journal might want you to make corrections to your data. It would be best if you are prepared to make such modifications. Ensure critical engagement with pertinent literature. You might want to review some recent publications from the time you wrote your dissertation. On that basis, you can update the information in your paper. Include the works of authors who might have published in a similar domain recently. This would project your grasp over your domain and thus augment your credibility. It would also be worthwhile if you are prepared for the worst. The worst in this case would be being prepared for rejection. In some instances, it is an outright rejection but there is a silver lining. Certain reviewers give you an opportunity to make changes and resubmit your paper. But, what you need to keep in mind is that comments from the reviewers are an opportunity to enhance the quality of your paper. Simply said, being patient helps.

Conclusion

To conclude, I would like to stress upon the significance of publishing your Dissertation as a Manuscript. My original research revolved around homeless individuals, a group that is susceptible and marginalized which somehow ignited a sense of responsibility to render the findings public. Further, with a view to expand the reach of my research and create engagement with non-academic individuals, I created a report for homeless centers that I worked with along with the published article. If you look at the impact factor of publishing your dissertation as a manuscript in some journal, your publication might not make much of a difference from a policy point of view considering its limited reach. Nonetheless, when you Publish Your Paper With A Journal Publication, it substantiates the quality of your research. Though publishing an article can be a challenge, yet it can be a very fruitful experience too.
