Where and How to Start Your Research?

Understanding the Purpose, structure and components of a research

Research is a process to discover new knowledge. According to the Code of Federal Regulations (45 CFR 46. (d)) with regards to the protection of human subjects, research has been defined as a systematic inquiry that entails data collection, documentation of critical information and analysis and interpretation of that data, in accordance with appropriate methodologies set by specific professional fields and academic disciplines.

However, research is different than other forms of discovering knowledge (like reading a book) because it uses a systematic process called the Scientific Method.

Research in general, being conducted to evaluate the validity of hypothesis or an interpretive framework, to assemble a body of substantive knowledge and findings for sharing them in appropriate manner and to generate questions for further inquiries.

Research can be carried out with human beings, animals, plants, other organisms and inorganic matter. When research has been carried out with human beings and animals it must follow rules and guidelines as specified by the respective country of laws (e.g. U.S Federal Government) and reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). In specific when research involves human subjects and has direct interaction with participants or data linked to personal identifiers, it should always fall under the purview of the IRB.

IRB is concerned with the data collection methodology in the field (e.g. observation, interview, experimentation, collection), the use of that data, rather than the broader validity of the hypothesis or research questions or the quality of inferences that may results.

No matter what topic is being studies, the value of any research purely depends on how well it is designed and done.
